Friday Fancies: Beachy Chic

beachy chic

I absolutely love the beach! It's probably one of my favorite things about summer. The grand part of it is, I feel so thankful to live only three miles from Lake Michigan so the beach is always close at hand. I need to go more though. Things just always seem to get in the way!

But if I were to go today (hopefully I can go on Sunday!), I'd definitely want to walk up and down the beach with my family in this little outfit. I love this maxi, color and all, and I LOVE this beach bag. It's perfect for holding all the essentials: magazines, a blanket, a picnic, all that good stuff! Plus, I just had to add the fedora. I had to! Have you been to the beach lately? What's your essential beach look?

Hopefully my weekend will be able to squeeze in some beach time! I have a full day of work today, wedding tomorrow, and hopefully on Sunday I can relax and recharge. What are you up to?

Have safe and happy weekends all! Head over to Long Distance Loving and check out the rest of those fancies!

Just so you know...

Source: mochatini.org via Susan on Pinterest

Excuse me friends, I'm calling it an early morning. So I'll see you guys later! I'm gonna go make it happen! I'm still in the interview process, so when opportunities knock, I have to try my hardest to get them to open the door and stay awhile. Whatever the plan holds, I'm just along for the ride!

Flora I'm fawning for

I don't know about your neighborhood, but in mine, all I can see are hydrangeas. They are everywhere! On my running route, almost every yard had a bit of that lush gorgeousness in front.

Well, my house is no exception.

We LOVE our hydrangeas and my mom deserves all credit. I may be biased, but they have to be the prettiest in the neighborhood. We have pink, purple, blue and white, but I think the blue are my favorite.

I would be tempted to pick them all if they didn't look so pretty in our backyard!

What flora are you fawning over at the moment?

Diggin' Denim

I've been searching for a denim jacket for months. Whenever I go into a thrift store or consignment store, I look for the right wash and the right fit. Well this weekend, I found it:

Here it is in all of its glory! (it looks a little bit darker in person too)

I couldn't help but think of all the fashion bloggers that I look up to that rock the denim jacket:

I adore Jessica, Kendi and Blair's style on a daily basis and when I saw that they had been rocking the denim, I knew it was time for me.

However, all denim has a different wash and when I brought my jacket home, my sister Ellen told me that mine was too dark and looked a little bit early 2000s (which was probably its real shelf date, let's be honest!). What shade do you prefer? Do you like the dark, or would you lean towards a lighter shade? Ellen wants to bleach this one, so we'll see what I decide. But for now, with all the cool nights, it's the perfect layer!

Long Overdue

This weekend was so much needed for me! I loved having some quality time with friends while we celebrated a wedding and danced the night away!

The bride had such cute wedding details, like open seating, three tiers of cookies instead of cake, and each of the tables were labeled with a composer's name. I loved that! (and seeing as the couple met in their church orchestra it made perfect sense!)

I was so excited to see all of these girls, and as luck would have it, I get to see them all again next weekend at another wedding.

And following your advice I wore a big statement necklace with the black dress. Too bad I didn't get a shot of the whole thing, but I'd say it was a hit!

Hope your weeks are off to a great start!

Friday Fancies: Block Party!

Color Block

It's color block party time! I think this trend is really cool, but with the exception of this dress, I've never really tried it. But a few months back, I spotted this maxi dress at Old Navy and I seriously wanted to try both a maxi and the color block trend. I absolutely love it!

It can be dressed both up and down and it definitely turns some heads! I love these blues together and I prefer the subtle straps rather than have this be strapless (if some of you ladies know what I mean!). I'd take it to the beach or a night out and it would be fabulous either way. Maybe I  should try more color block pieces, just because the trend is so cool!

This weekend I'm taking my mini-trip out of town for a wedding. I'm so excited that I get to see some friends of mine that I haven't seen in awhile. This is going to be fun. And you ladies won: the black dress it will be! Hopefully I'll have something to show for it next week!

Happy Weekend!

No More Criticizing!

Source: pindar.info via Susan on Pinterest

Does anyone else find that sometimes they get too invested in what choices others make? Whether it's my friends or even members of my own family, I sometimes find myself saying, "This person can't do this. It's bad for them." "This person can't go here. They have no money."

What do I really know about their choices?

So I'm choosing to stay out of it and focus on me and mine. It's just the right thing to do.

Colorful or classic?

Hello ladies! Today I would like your advice. I'm going to a wedding this weekend (actually I'm going to two weddings two weeks in a row!) and have been torn about what to wear. I told my friend that I was thinking black and she said it's summer, wear some color! So if you were me, would you do color or stick to basic black?

I love this black peplum dress! It's so gorgeous on, and I think the peplum is so feminine, with a little spin on a classic LBD. I'd keep the accessories silver, and add a bit of sparkle as well.

I love this color blocked frock that I snagged last year. It's just so fun and I love wearing it, I feel trendy! It's a little funkier and I would accessorize with gold and my faux snake-skin Forever 21 strappy heels.

So what would you do?? A note: for this wedding I am the pianist for the ceremony. Not that makes a huge difference, but usually musicians wear black when they perform at gigs. But I'm willing to break from tradition! Do you lean towards black at weddings or do you embrace colors?

50 and Fabulous

One of the most beautiful women I know, my lovely mother Sally, turns 50 today!

50! She's a gorgeous 50, let me tell you, inside and out!

my grandpa thinks she's pretty great

My mom has always gone above and beyond for my dad, my siblings and me. She has always provided everything we have needed and more. She's a phenomenal cook, has the softest, sweetest heart, and is so extremely creative and fashionable. I swear, without her, I would be a big style faux paw! She also has such a cute Pinterest page and has always regretted that she hasn't started a blog. She'd inspire, let me tell you!

my dad is partial to her as well!

My mom has had some amazing years behind her, but as always, the best is yet to come. I don't know what I would do without that smiling face in the morning, always has a fresh pot of coffee ready, gives the best advice and makes me laugh every day. I'm so blessed that she has had so many happy, healthy years.

To the next 50! Happy Birthday Mom! We all love you so much!

I scream, you scream...

I have always loved ice cream and it always tastes best in the summer months. The days are hot and we all need that extra treat. I love ice cream just in a cone, but sometimes it's fun to have ice cream treats that are more than just the ice cream! Last night, my aunt made ice cream pie (DELISH!) and over the weekend I made cookie ice cream sandwiches (YUM!). Both were hits and now it has me thinking of how many possibilities ice cream has:

Sometimes those indulgences are worth it! I definitely want to try that waffle sandwich and that cute looking ice cream cake. Or maybe the nutella cakes? Choices choices! What's your favorite ice cream dessert?

Friday Fancies: Outfit Crush

Awhile back, I had a crush on this outfit and I still just love it for summer, and even early fall. I absolutely love the simplicity of all the neutral colors working in perfect harmony! The skirt, simple top and perfect wedge would make any summer's day that much more exciting. Besides, sometimes it's nice to take a break from all those colors!

I just love it so much, I wouldn't change a thing! Cop out? Maybe, but seriously this simple look outdoes itself for work or play!

neutraled

A few of my gals are coming over tonight to make homemade pizzas and play some bags, perfect summer night in the backyard. I'm taking advantage of this heat ladies! Perfect weekend for it! What are you all up to?

Happy Weekend! and go check out Long Distance Loving for more fancies!

Just a good reminder I think. Because really, things could be worse. I'll never go a day without doing this again.

Happy Thursday!

My 2012 Summer Bucket List

Hopefully I'll be able to accomplish everything on my list! I could've listed a lot more on there, but to keep things simple, I'll start here. Also, this was the first document I've ever made using photoshop. Do you use it? I have no idea what I'm doing. That's probably another goal I should set: learn how to use this thing! Any tips? How do you all make your posts look so pretty?

What's on your summer bucket list?

He does it Again

So over the years I've glanced at the Tonys. I've watched bits and pieces every year, but it's never been an event like the Oscars where I end up getting sucked in for the whole show.

This year, I watched the whole show. What can I say? I love a good musical!

The performances were fantastic!! And I have to say, Mr. NPH tied the whole show together. It was his third time hosting, and though the only thing I saw from last year's show was his opening number (which was hilarious) he did a really great job this year! His closing number was so funny and quick witted too, I loved the whole show!

I mean, look at the guy. How can you not smile by just looking at him?

There was a little bit of that too!

What I love about the Tonys is seeing the shows that are "it" right now in NY. Hopefully if they keep it up in NY they'll be bound to come to Chicago! I'm hoping for Newsies and Porgy and Bess, and just because it stole the show, Once looks good too. I also thought that Audra McDonald sounded absolutely gorgeous during her performance, and her speech was sweet too!

Are you a fan of musicals/plays? Did you watch the Tonys? I loved it! Perfect ending to a wonderful weekend, if I do say so myself!

Friday Fancies: Short Story

Short Story

Well, it's here: short season! I love sporting some shorts when the time comes and though I don't own any, I'd love a pair of these lace shorts. Plus a great thing about shorts is they can go from work to play! Because why not be versatile! I love this day outfit with that color mint, keeping it neutral for work and then mixing it up with some colors for play. Plus I think there's something just cute about wedges and lacey shorts: definitely feminine! Check out Long Distance Loving as always for more fancies.

Also, I signed up for Blogger Blitz Chicago this week! Can't wait for July to come. Let me know if you'll be there!

I'll be out sporting some shorts this weekend in the Chicago heat (p.s. they're $12 at Target this week. Yeah, I know. How did I know that? hmmm...good colors too!) I have my first summer choir rehearsal, doing a bit of relaxing, and going to a piano concert Sunday, can't wait! What are you all up to? Have safe, fun enjoyable weekends ladies!

what summer tastes like

I don't know about you, but there are a few meals that are quintessentially summer to me, one of those being homemade turkey burgers with sauteed onions, sweet potatoes, fresh greek salad with feta and fresh fruit (who doesn't love cherries?). Mary and I made this meal last night and I thought nothing had ever tasted so good! Sitting on our back patio helps too!

I guess that means one thing: summer's here! What are your quintessential summer meals? We tend to have lots of bruschetta with our fresh tomatoes for lunch, grilled chicken with hot sauce and bleu cheese dressing and of course I love to end meals with a cold dessert (lots of popsicles and my favorite fresh peach ice cream comes in soon!).

~Susan

and my apologies for being so behind this week. It's catch up time!

Wish I were there!

I have to say that I am not as obsessed with the Royal family as my sister Mary is (literally she's so sad that she couldn't be in England right now!) but I still love the Royal Traditions. They're so elegant and when I see these pictures of the Royal Family in all of their glory during these beautiful celebrations for the Queen, I can't help but smile!

Congratulations Queen Elizabeth! What a great example you have set for 60 years!

Act the way you want to Feel!

Though I wasn't as diligent about reading it quickly, I finished The Happiness Project last night. I have to say I really thought it was wonderfully written and the concept is just so fascinating.

If you've never read/heard of the book before, the book documents the journey of its author, Gretchen Rubin, as she spends a year making different resolutions each month on how to be happier, without greatly making any big changes in her life. It covered everything, from how she approached food and how she had energy, to organizing her closets (and then becoming obsessed with it!), to how she fought with her husband, to reconnecting with old friends, how she started a blog, how she spent money, how she became spiritual, and how she had more fun. She said right off the bat that she really always was a happy person, but the concept of happiness and being happier spoke to her, so she researched and researched and found that she could change in her life without changing her life to become happier. After all, she figured that the days are long, but the years are short and she did not want to waste any time (because really how true is that!).

I won't give it all away, but it definitely got me thinking as I read how I approach all of those everyday situations. I became more conscious of my own habits and because of her book, I think I am going to walk away with a few tidbits, one of the biggest being Act the way you want to Feel and Be Susan (hers was Be Gretchen, but you get the idea!). I've always been a really happy person, but I think that if I take these little resolutions with me, I'll be even happier and can help people more than I do now.

So go pick it up at your library! If you read it, what did you think about it?

Happy Saturday!

Friday Fancies: White Party

When I think summer, I think white. White is just so clean, crisp, and effortlessly gorgeous on anyone who wears it and styles it well. You can never really have a faux paw with white! So that being said, I couldn't help but embrace this theme.

I don't know if anyone of you ever watched Gossip Girl, but our favorite episode has always been The White Party. It takes place in a beautiful garden and all in attendance had to wear white. Well, the gal who stole the show was definitely Miss Blair (Leighton Meester). Her whole look was stunning. The show was years ago, but yet this image will always stay classic with my sisters.

I know, gorgeous right? Here's my spin on it:

Gossip Inspired White

White 1

Ok, and then I styled another white outfit just for the heck of it! This is what I'd love to be sporting this weekend!

Here's to white! What a wonderful start to summer! Who can believe it's  June 1? Jeez where does the time go? Go check out more white fancies at Long Distance Loving!

Have wonderful weekends! I can honestly say that I'm not doing too much (nice right!). Hope you all can stop and smell all the June roses!
